TOP TEN MOST OUTRAGEOUS STATEMENTS OF 2004

Taken directly from: http://mediamatters.org/items/200412230005

Here are the Top Ten most outrageous statements we have heard this year from members of the media. From anti-Semitic comments and attacks on women, gays, and lesbians to reprehensible acceptance of the Abu Ghraib prisoner torture, these statements are acutely representative of the conservative hate speech we found in the news media:

Rush Limbaugh on the Abu Ghraib photos: “I’m talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of need to blow some steam off?”

Ann Coulter: “[Senator John] Kerry will improve the economy in the emergency services and body bag industry.”

Tony Blankley called philanthropist George Soros “a Jew who figured out a way to survive the Holocaust.”

Michael Savage: “When you hear ‘human rights,’ think gays. … [T]hink only one thing: someone who wants to rape your son.”

Oliver North: “Every terrorist out there is hoping John Kerry is the next president of the United States.”
Pat Robertson on gays and lesbians: “[S]elf-absorbed hedonists … that want to impose their particular sexuality on the rest of America.”

Pat Buchanan: “[H]omosexuality is an affliction, like alcoholism.”

Bill O’Reilly to Jewish caller: “[I]f you are really offended, you gotta go to Israel.”

Bill Cunningham (Clear Channel radio host who appeared as a guest on The Sean Hannity Show): The election is over because “Elizabeth Edwards has now sung.”

Jerry Falwell: “And we’re going to invite PETA [to "wild game night"] as our special guest, P-E-T-A — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. We want you to come, we’re going to give you a top seat there, so you can sit there and suffer. This is one of my special groups, another one’s the ACLU, another is the NOW — the National Order of Witches [sic]. We’ve got — I’ve got a lot of special groups.”

The FICO Score Misconceptions

There are many misconceptions about credit scores out there. There are borrowers who believe that they don’t have a credit score. There are others who think that their credit scores don’t really matter. These sorts of misconceptions can hurt your chances of gaining employment, obtaining preferred interest rates, and even your chances of qualifying for renting an apartment.

The truth is, of you have a bank account and you pay utility bills, then you have a credit score, and it matters more than you might think. Your credit score can be called many things such as a credit risk rating, a FICO score, a credit rating, a FICO rating, or a credit risk score. All these terms refer to the same thing: the three-digit number that lets lenders get an idea of how likely you are to repay your bills.

Every time you apply for credit, apply for a job, or even apply to some apartment complexes, your credit score is checked. Another misconception is that employers check your credit only if you apply for a job that involves handling money. The fact is that many companies use credit checking as part of their standard background checks.

Make no mistake, your credit report can be checked by anyone with a legitimate business need to do so. Your credit score is calculated based on complex formulas. Things such as your past financial responsibilities, past payment records, credit limits, credit line utilization, open and closed accounts, and public records are all considered. It provides potential lenders with a quick snapshot of your current financial state and past repayment habits.

In other words, your credit score lets lenders know quickly how much of a credit risk you are. Based on this credit score, lenders decide whether to trust you financially. They use this information to approve or decline a loan. Even if approved, your credit score can have a direct effect on the interest rates you pay. Apartment managers can use your credit score to decide whether you can be trusted to pay your rent on time. Employers can use your credit score to decide, perhaps unfairly, how you manage your life. Some employers find that if you’re poor with money, you have poor organization skills and no attention to detail — things that are a must in a corporate environment.

The problem with credit scores is that there is quite a bit of misinformation circulated about, especially through some less than scrupulous companies who claim they can help you with your credit report and credit score — for a fee, of course.

From advertisements and suspect claims, customers sometimes come away with the idea that in order to boost their credit score, they have to pay money to a company or leave credit repair in the hands of so-called “experts.” Nothing could be further from the truth. It is perfectly possible to pay down debts and boost your credit on your own, with no expensive help whatsoever. There are many free resources on the web that will enable you to do just that.

Gastric Bypass Surgery And Weight Loss

Gastric bypass (also called bariatric surgery) closes off a large portion of the stomach, leaving only a pouch the size of an egg. Gastric bypass works by restricting food intake. Patients feel full after eating small amounts of food. Fewer calories are eaten and weight is lost. Gastric bypass patients typically lose 70% of their excess weight, most of it in the first year after surgery.

Gastric bypass surgery combines the creation of a small stomach pouch to restrict food intake and construction of bypasses of the duodenum and other segments of the small intestine to cause malabsorption (decreased ability to absorb nutrients from food).

There are two types of gastric bypass surgery: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) and extensive gastric bypass (biliopancreatic diversion).

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most common gastric bypass procedure performed in the U.S. First, a small stomach pouch is created by stapling part of the stomach together or by vertical banding. This limits how much food you can eat. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the duodenum as well as the first portion of the jejunum. This causes reduced calorie and nutrient absorption. This procedure can now be done with a laparoscope (a thin telescope-like instrument for viewing inside the abdomen) in some people. This involves using small incisions and generally has a more rapid recovery time.

In extensive gastric bypass - a more complicated gastric bypass operation - the lower portion of the stomach is removed. The small pouch that remains is connected directly to the final segment of the small intestine, thus completely bypassing both the duodenum and jejunum. Although this procedure successfully promotes weight loss, it is not as widely used because of the high risk for nutritional deficiencies.

Gastric bypass operations that cause malabsorption and restrict food intake produce more weight loss than restriction operations, which only decrease food intake. People who have bypass operations generally lose two-thirds of their excess weight within 2 years.

There are risks associated with gastric bypass surgery. People who undergo this procedure are at risk for: pouch stretching (stomach gets bigger overtime, stretching back to its normal size before surgery), band erosion (the band closing off part of the stomach disintegrates), breakdown of staple lines (band and staples fall apart, reversing procedure), leakage of stomach contents into the abdomen (this is dangerous because the acid can eat away other organs), nutritional deficiencies causing health problems.

Gastric bypass operations also may cause “dumping syndrome,” whereby stomach contents move too rapidly through the small intestine. Symptoms include nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, and, occasionally, diarrhea after eating, as well as the inability to eat sweets without becoming extremely weak. Gallstones can occur in response to rapid weight loss. They can be dissolved with medication taken after the surgery.

The limited absorption of vitamin B12 and iron can cause anemia. The lack of calcium absorption can cause osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. People who undergo this procedure are required to take nutritional supplements that usually prevent these deficiencies. The more extensive the bypass operation, the greater is the risk for complications and nutritional deficiencies. People who undergo extensive bypasses of the normal digestive process require not only close monitoring, but also lifelong use of special foods and medications.

Low carbs, the bottom line: you may lose weight quicker on a low-carbohydrate diet than on a diet to cut calories. However, don’t expect to lose as much weight as diet books say you will and remember that the risks of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and osteoporosis for people on low-carb diets have not been tested. There’s plenty of research that shows the way to go is moderation in eating a diet rich in fruits, veggies, beans, whole grains, seafood, poultry, and low-fat dairy products.

Foresee or Forsake

What is the key to success? There has been enough written on that subject to fill the Grand Canyon. Is there any one factor that can make or break a business? If there is one key factor to ensuring success, is it available to everyone? Does it involve money, background, education or something each one of us can possess and utilize?

Loving new challenges I’ve undertaken various business ventures, some with success, while others fell by the way side. In the recent year I have extended these ventures to the Internet.

Through my failures and successes I have learned that there is one very essential ingredient, in fact the most essential ingredient to ensuring the success of your business. Whether the business is online or off, service or sales, part time challenge or life’s dream. In every situation this one key ingredient must be present for any business venture to flourish. And without this ingredient, failure is a certainty.

It is inevitable that you will eventually forsake your business venture or it will forsake you unless you develop the ability to ‘foresee its success.

It is vision that will give you the stick-to-itiveness when the road seems all uphill. It is the foreseen success that will enable you to continue working hard and long when it seems to be going nowhere. For every business has its clouds. It is vision that will enable you to persist so you can reach the ‘pot of gold’ beyond the rainbow.

That’s the key. You must be able to envision yourself as though you have already accomplished the success. Picture yourself the successful entrepreneur you want to be. Imagine the business earning the money that want your it to provide. ‘Foresee yourself as successful’. If you can see yourself as a success, then you will succeed.

Some may call this self-confidence, or belief in oneself. That is a large part of it, but there is more. Be able to dream your success in such a way that you actually are able to see yourself already having reached your desired goal.

Liken it to an actor in a movie. A successful actor becomes the person he is portraying, he believes himself to be the character, therefore he is the character. After all, are we not what we believe we are. The way we see ourselves is how we perform. Believe yourself to be the successful entrepreneur you are desiring to be. Act out the part. Draw up a plan, place yourself in the plan and act out the successful role. Something that works for me is a daily ritual in the morning. When I am cleansing my face and brushing my teeth, I take a few minutes for play acting. Similar to positive affirmations, I envision myself in my business successes. Just as a child daydreams for a few minutes a day. Does this really work? Try it and see.

Have you ever known a compulsive liar. (I am not advocating you become a compulsive liar, of course.) If you have ever known someone who is really a compulsive liar, you will know that after a while they cannot distinguish between truth and the lie. This is because your sub-conscious will believe what you tell it out loud.

Take a few minutes a day and act out loud your success. If asked, all success magnates would have a story of vision.

Go ahead give it a try. Foresee your success, act as though it has already been accomplished, take steps to obtain the skills, work at it diligently, never lose your vision, “keep your eyes on the prize”, and you will achieve the success you foresee.

Refinancing - Is this a Beneficial Route for You?

There’s been much talk about refinance over the past few years,
however, few people understand how refinancing works and why it
can be beneficial.

When mortgage interest rates plummet, homeowners flock to
refinance their mortgage, and naturally so. The reasoning behind
most refinance is that getting a lower interest rate will affect
the long-term mortgage balance. This is true, but it’s not the
only reason a person may choose to refinance.

There are quite a few good reasons why refinancing may be right
for you.

Below are some of the most common reasons for refinancing and
the benefits behind each reason:

1. The homeowner wishes to negotiate a shorter term for their
loan to pay it off more quickly and save money on the overall
balance and interest.

2. Interest rates are lower than the original loan, and the
homeowner wishes to take advantage of the lower rates while
they’re available.

NOTE: This is only beneficial if the homeowner plans to stay in
their home a while after refinancing. If they’re planning to
move within the next year or two, there’s really no reason to
refinance because of the fees incurred while refinancing.

3. The homeowner has an adjustable-rate mortgage and wishes to
transfer to a fixed rate. Although variable rates are often
lower, there’s no guarantee or stability. With a fixed rate, the
homeowner has peace of mind that the rate will remain the same
throughout the years.

4. The homeowner needs extra cash to pay towards a large
purchase such as home repairs, college tuition for their
children, etc. This can only be done if there is enough equity
in the home.

The best ways to decide if refinancing is right for you is to
consult a local mortgage center and / or research it online. The
Internet is a certainly a great place to commence research
before making your decision. There are many websites and online
calculators available for free that will help you to determine
if refinance really will be worth it for you.

If you feel it’s not going to be worth the costs, but still
would like to make changes to your mortgage terms, you can
contact your current lender to find out if you have other
options available. Sometimes, the interest rate can be lowered
or the payment modified - without refinancing.

Remember: Learn as many facts as possible before making your
“big decision”. You’ll save time and money in the future.

We Gather Together

We gather together to give ask the Lord’s blessing. Words
paraphrased from am old hymn.

It seem that I have heard nothing lately, even from myself,
except complaints and descriptions of what we don’t have or
can’t afford. Followed by dire predictions of our future.

I agree that things are really bad economically and with
society. We are divided on almost every issue, allover the
world. Yes, things will probably get worse. BUT -

Do You walk miles in the burning sun to carry home the days
prescious water?

Do you live in a shack amongst people who scare you to death?

When was the last time you slept on the street while the snow
sifted around you?

Is there civil war blasting everything around you?

Have you had to flee from your home in fear of death on your own
familiar street?

Do you suppose, even for a minute. That you have something to
be thankful for?

Even as I say this, I’m sure some of our fellow readers answered
“yes” to some of the above questions.

But for most of us, these questions remind us of exactly how
well off we are, how lucky to have even humble homes to shelter
us from the cold and the heat and the vagaries of the weather.
To put supper on the table. And lunch. And breakfast, whether or
not it is fancy. To have clothes to keep us warm.

It may be time to take stock and be truly thankful.

I am thankful that I can still type, even though my hands don’t
work much any more. And that I have the opportunity to reach out
to you all and offer help or just listening.

I am thankful for my home, my pets, that my children love and
respect me., that I have a wheelchair to give me a sense of
dignity, and an income even if small. I am grateful for more
than I can mention to you.

Thanksgiving is this month here in the United States.

I heard a grumble yesterday at physical rehab, that there wasn’t
much to be grateful for this year.

Don’t believe it. We are all blessed everyday with the things we
take for granted. I promise myself that I will stop and remember
all that is good.

Happy Thanksgiving.

BEV

Try making a list of all the things you have to be thankful for.
It will make your world look brighter.

The Wedding

Weddings are a time of celebration (an obvious statement and no revelation). Perhaps you have found, like me, that some are more fun and stand out in your mind more than others. Sometimes, the beauty of the ceremony or the obvious love of the couple leaves memorable imprints. Other times, the fine meal and wines are the most remembered. Then there are the flawless ones where everything goes like perfect clockwork from the delivery of the vows to the after wedding party. In recent memories, two weddings fit the latter. One, the marriage of my niece Holly to her husband Rob.

I still visualize the peaceful floral outdoor setting followed by a wonderful meal. How my sister and brother-in-law planned for months to create a lasting memory for their daughter and new son. More recently, my niece Erin and Patrick were wed. Over the months, we watched and listened as Erin’s parents along with the couple planned, worked, and strategized to create a perfect wedding experience. The momentous day finally arrived. Following the ceremony, family and guests headed to the Capitol Hyatt in Columbus for a party second to none. A sixteen-piece band played as toasts were raised and fine food was served. Then the obligatory first dance arrived. All smiled, many remembering their own history. Then, wow! The couple stopped the music. Everyone was stunned. But not for long! Erin and Patrick, with microphones in hand, suddenly burst into song, accompanied by the band, singing an unabashed rendition of “I’ve Got You Babe” of Sonny and Cher fame. Suddenly, an aura of amazement descended upon the crowd. Smiles, applause, and laughter filled the room as two expressed their obvious love for each other. I have never seen anything like it as the air was charged with good will, hope, and best wishes. I smile now as I write this. Life’s celebrations, aren’t they wonderful?
