Top Ten Questions to Ask Yourself When Selecting Your Target Market

Target Market is defined as the group to which you aim your marketing efforts. The more clearly you define and understand your market, the better you can market directly to that group. Talk their language, answer their problems, and show that your really “get” them and they are more likely to do business with you. Just because you market to one group however doesn’t mean you have to turn away business from another group. Your product or service may be appropriate for many groups but your marketing will be more effective if you market directly to one at a time.

1. What are the demographics of my market? What are the measurable statistics that I know about my market such as age, income or occupation?

2. What are the psychographics of my market? What are the lifestyle preferences of my market? Are they all music lovers, golfers, or condo owners?

3. Is this a group I enjoy working with and/or find fascinating? If I have to spend a lot of time with this group will I be bored or repelled by it?

4. What kind of connection do I have to this market so I know it well? Am I part of the market myself or have I been part of it in the past? Do I have family and friends that are part of it?

5. What are the professional organizations, clubs, or activities that my target market frequents? I want to be able to find my market and talk to them directly. Do I know where to go?

6. What newspapers, magazines or websites does my market enjoy? If I want to stay in touch with the market ongoing then I need to know what this group is reading.

7. Do I understand the problems that my market faces? Will my product or service solve a problem for them?

8. Do I know the language that this market uses? Knowing the vocabulary of my market gives me more credibility.

9. Do I know what attracts this group? How do I let this group know about my product or service? What will get their attention?

10. Do I know who influences this group? Who are the people respected by this group? What are they advocating and can I align my product or service in some way with them?

Does Your Personal Trainer Know Squat?

Is your personal trainer qualified? How experienced are they? How can you know before committing to a long-term agreement? These are all questions that clients looking to hire a personal trainer have or should have.

Personal trainers hold a great deal of responsibility in their hands, as they “direct” their clients how to exercise safely and effectively. Personal training can be a lucrative career too, with some trainers charging as much if not more than doctor or lawyer consultation rates.

It is unlikely that you would hire a lawyer or a doctor strictly on heresy, popularity or if they “looked the role” but rather you would spend a good deal of time researching his or her credentials, track record and education. So why if you’re going to pay a personal trainer equivalent fees should choosing an exercise professional be any different?

Rather than re-hash the details of the typical “How to Choose a Personal Trainer” cliche, this article provides the lay consumer just two helpful pieces of information to help when deciding on how to choose a personal trainer.

Grade the trainer’s qualifications

A personal trainer is an exercise professional so their credentials should demonstrate this. Check to see if the trainer has had a formal education in exercise science, physiology or sports medicine.

Exercise is about science and is grounded firmly in the fields of anatomy, physiology and nutrition. Each field complements and builds on the other. Even the most experienced (or well-built!) personal trainer cannot fake knowledge he does not have. A thorough understanding of these fields is essential to effective and safe exercise instruction and is unlikely to be gained in a weekend or even a multiple week study course.

The client looking to hire a personal trainer should also check the certifying organization. Currently the most respected credentials are offered by the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association), NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) and ACE (American Council on Exercise).

Some certifying bodies such the NSCA require certain educational requirements to be completed before sitting for the exam. An example is the NSCA’s Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), which requires a bachelors degree in a related field to sit for the exam.

Grade the trainer’s experience

An experienced and well-educated exercise professional can easily recognize others on par with themselves simply by observing the manner in how they work with their client and by watching the client’s exercise technique.

But what about the casual exerciser who knows nothing of exercise or fitness? How can they discern the small details that give clues to a trainer’s experience and quality of instruction? After all, certification only means that the personal trainer passed a written exam.

The answer is that it is very tricky for a layperson to judge personal trainers themselves from simple observation and as a result, may rely too heavily on the opinion of others.

Don’t get me wrong there is nothing more valuable to a personal trainer than a good reputation and “word of mouth”, but an informed consumer looking for a quality exercise professional should do a little more homework.

While there may be dozens of time consuming and complicated ways to assess a personal trainer’s instruction quality and experience, this article describes a single test that will give the client a basic insight before committing to a contract or agreement. A client should not be embarrassed or scared to use this test; it is the full right and privilege of the client to interview and consult with the trainer before committing on a long-term or contractual basis.

The importance of the squat

The squat is a very functional movement that mimics everyday tasks such as lifting and getting out of the seated position. The squat is also quite a complex movement to both learn and teach and must be performed correctly with optimal technique to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Consider the importance of instructing safe technique in the squat. A loaded bar resting on a client’s back places them in a compromising position, opening the door to the possibility of a crippling injury. A personal trainer then needs to be particularly attentive to detail when their client performs such an exercise.

The squat test then is a good means of roughly assessing the trainer’s instructional ability and experience.

How can I use the squat test for grading my personal trainer?

If you can do it before signing with the trainer, try to observe him or her instructing other clients in the performance of a squat. Does the trainer carefully observe the client’s technique (in a mirror if spotting) and offer pointers if necessary or does he or she look around or out the window and seem indifferent? As I mentioned, a squat can be a dangerous exercise to perform, especially for the inexperienced exerciser so attentiveness to detail is essential here.

If you are unable to observe the personal trainer’s technique beforehand, request a free consultation and during this time have him or her instruct you in the performance of a body weight squat (even if you hate squats and never plan on doing them as part of an exercise routine, request that the trainer observe your technique and offer pointers as if it were a barbell loaded squat).

In either situation, if the observed client’s technique demonstrates the following pointers, or if the personal trainer confidently makes mention of most or all of them, it indicates a good working knowledge in how to teach and ensure safety and correct form in the squat.

If the trainer passes the squat test, the experience and skill they demonstrate will most likely transfer to the instruction of other exercises too.

Here are some of the most important pointers for safe and effective performance of the back squat:

The bar rests on a platform base of the lower neck and shoulders

The feet shoulder/hip width apart and very slightly toed out; the heels should only be placed on blocks if the instructor observes the heels rising off the floor in the decent (tight calf muscles)

The lifter inhales before the descent and holds his/her breath (kudos if the instructor mentions avoiding the “Valsalva Maneuver”* here)

The legs “buckle” under control – like “sitting down in a chair”

As the knees bend, they remain directly in line with the toes and do not move past the toes

The spine remains straight and very close to vertical throughout the entire movement (a slight “hole” is allowed in the lower back, but it is essential that the upper back does not “round”)

The chest remains up and out (extra points if the instructor mentions keeping the gaze straight ahead or slightly above to prevent spinal rounding)

The back of the head remains approximately parallel to a vertical line from the back of the heels – which remain flat on the floor

The bar tracks a near vertical line throughout the movement while “pressing with the heels”

The client exhales through the “sticking point” **

(Your flexibility may limit the performance of a perfect squat but the pointers are still valid).

While a client must consider the other attributes of a personal trainer such as personality and rapport, it is important to have some means of measuring his or her experience and credentials before making a decision to commit to a contract or long-term agreement. Hopefully this article has provided some very basic information for the lay fitness consumer to be a slightly more “informed” one.

* Valsalva maneuver – when a lifter “holds his breath” and strains against a closed glottis. This maneuver is acceptable for experienced lifters, but performing it leads to great increases in blood pressure and chest cavity compression.

** Sticking point – the transition point from descending into the squat and ascending out of it.

Vacation in Central Florida

There is so much to see and do in Central Florida, it’s hard to know what to select first! Having lived and worked in the area I know there are few things that are must-see, and others you may want to take-a-pass on, but the choice is up to you.

Do you want an enchanting adventure with plenty of thrills, family entertainment, and maybe a reminiscent visit to an old favorite? Or are you on the cutting edge of new adventures and want to experience only the newest thrills engineered to make all you adrenaline-junkies go wild?

Well, Central Florida definitely will fit the bill – whether you have a million-dollar budget, or a more modest family budget, there will be something for everyone in the family. The key is to plan ahead, know what the “big-ticket” items will cost, like your airfare, hotel, attraction tickets, and meals, and then find creative ways to get the most out every vacation dollar you have to spend. Of course one of the biggest commodities on your trip will be TIME! There is just no way to get to everything done in a single trip, so think carefully about how to budget your time, and your whole family will come away with memories to last a lifetime.

One of the best ways to settle arguments about who wants to go where, and when, is to have a good idea before you even leave home about what the options are, and how long it will take to visit each place. For instance, you may want to spend 1 or 2 days at Disney World, while someone else may want to spend an entire week! A good way to start planning is for everyone in the family to build a wish list of their own “must see” adventures, then as a family, sit down and decide where you can agree or where you might have to sacrifice things for another trip. If you approach the options with the idea that it may not all fit into one trip, you build in automatic anticipation for another adventure at some later time.

Just be careful not to over-schedule your trip, as you will want plenty of flexibility to explore things you discover along the way, and to have plenty of down time. Don’t forget to take the weather into account for the time of year you are going to visit, and remember to plan your days around little-ones sleeping and eating schedules. If you give yourself a little more time for each event that you think it will take, you’ll avoid unpleasant surprises and give yourself room to relax and ENJOY your vacation.

Once you have your family’s wish lists, and you’ve started to narrow down the choices, take the time to learn the geography. If one member of the family wants to visit Busch Gardens in Tampa and the other wants to visit Daytona Beach, you’re talking about opposite sides of the state – one on the Gulf Coast and the other on the Atlantic Ocean! So keep your activities locations in mind and you’ll be sure to avoid disappointments. Florida is a lot bigger than it seems on the map, and you’re going to need road-time to get between attractions.

Of course you can always decide to divide and conquer, Dad takes the Gulf Coast and Mom takes the Atlantic Coast, but then you all miss the bonding time doing things as a family. On a smaller scale, the divide and conquer strategy works well for short time blocks; say you have some members of the family terrified of roller coasters, and other bored with quieter pursuits, you can split up for say an hour or two, then meet up for a sit-down lunch and share your morning adventures with each other. This also works well if you have several age ranges to accommodate – not everyone will be old enough, or ready to tackle some of the more intense rides, so it’s good to know those limitations and plan them into your day. Remember that at most attractions, you can wait in line as a family, and then one parent can go on the ride while the other parent waits at the end then switch.
The other considerations you will make is how each member of the family fundamentally feels about certain things – for instance, a trip to Sea World will satisfy those seeking an adventure as well as those family member that are particularly interested in nature, science, and animals while everyone has a great time!

Walt Disney World has grown up some in the past decade, and offers more of thrill rides, while maintaining the family atmosphere that Walt Disney himself founded Disneyland Park on back in the 1950’s. With their 50th Anniversary Celebration, they’ve proven to be the venerable giant in the entertainment and theme park industry, and no really does it better. Of course Universal Studios Orlando, Sea World, Busch Gardens Tampa to name a few do an outstanding job, and a visit to all of these parks is a great vacation experience – you just have to know your family preferences and which parks will cater to your needs the best.

And let’s not forget all the other options out there! With Kennedy Space Center, Water Parks, Gator Parks, NASCAR events, world class shopping, and other adventures, from Tampa Bay, Daytona Beach, Cape Canaveral, Kissimmee, and everything in between, Central Florida has a lot offer and plenty of sunshine to go around!

US Navy Submarines Which Fly

So often we see kids toys, which convert from a robot to a space ship or from a hot rod car to a robot. These toys are cool and kids love them indeed. Lego makes some interchangeable type toys like this and so do many other name brand companies like Hasbro.

Why do kids like these toys so much? Hard to say, but it does bring up a point as engineers blur the line between categories of fighting vehicles. For instance AUVs or autonomous underwater vehicles which are robotic min-submarines with no people in them which can do surveillance or become a single mission destroying unit like a torpedo if the target is high-value enough and makes sense to expend that amount of money to take out.

We also now have single mission UAVs which are unmanned aerial vehicles which are actually flying bombs and will loiter for hours until they find a target, if no target is found then they will come back and land and try again. The military has flying seaplanes and they have ships, which are part submarine and they have submarines, which are part boat and landing craft as well.

In the future we will need Manta Ray Type fighters and interceptors which are based under the ocean and are flying submarines, able to shoot out of the water like Manta Rays, hit the after burners and fly like a bat out of hell. We must spend the Research and Development monies now to make this simple idea a reality so that we can protect the American People, our great nation and those who are our friends and allies. Think on this in 2006.

PowerPoint Tips

1. Talk to your audience, not the screen. Trust the image behind you. Look at the laptop screen in front of you, if you have to.

2. Stand centre stage and put the screen off to the side.

3. Place the screen at a slight angle on the left side of the room or stage (and to your right). Adult learning research shows that people use the left-brain to process data, so put PowerPoint words, statistics, and graphs on the audience’s left.

4. Learn to command your equipment. When in ’slideshow’, the B key toggles to a blank screen (or W for white) when visuals aren’t required

5. A number followed by ENTER takes you to that slide. Keep a clearly numbered paper copy (6 slides per page) of your presentation so you can be flexible

6. Set up PC so that left mouse button takes you forward, the right button takes you back a slide.

7. Finish with blank slide at end

8. Put only enough data on each slide to jog your memory. The content should be in your head, not on the slides. Keep it simple.

9. If you have a busy set of slides which you have to use, then create an executive summary set to use whilst presenting and keep the busy set as handouts.

10. Avoid stock templates that just look cheap

11. Use a wireless remote to give you freedom of movement. Buy the smallest you can and learn to keep it in the centre of your palm so as not to fiddle with it. Alternatively put it in your back pocket when not using.

12. Definitely no fancy movement or sound effects. These are so embarrassing

13. If you just have to use a busy slide set then use TTT (touch, turn, talk) to isolate the section you want and maybe adapt a new slide which just shows that section blown up. This way you audience knows that the slide with the detail is still there as a handout.

14. Have each bullet point slide onto the screen one at a time so people can read it quickly and give their attention back to you as you explain it.

15. Summarize charts and graphs that are difficult to understand

16. Don’t clutter the slide – use two slides instead.

17. Use white or yellow letters on a dark background for good contrast. Dark blue is attractive and colourful at the same time.

18. The letters should be no smaller than a 26-point, sans serif font.

19. Use the 1:6:6 rule. One subject, no more than six lines with no more than 6 words per line

20. Don’t use canned clipart that everyone has seen. Use different clipart collections. Better still use photos and mini movies for added interest. But don’t clutter the slides with your technical brilliance.

21. If a slide doesn’t add value to your message, don’t use it.

Bottled Water Companies

The majority of bottled water drinkers prefer to use single serve containers instead of in glass containers due to the various advantages they offer. They are convenient and easy to carry as well as small and portable, making them easier to just in a bag when on the move. Most of the drinkers are the students, people who travel frequently, and athletes.

Apart from being small and portable, they are an answer to the consumers’ health concerns and to people with an aversion toward chemically treated water. These factors are being used by the companies to market their bottled water as being safe and free of harmful chemicals, such as the ones that might be found in the tap water.

The market for bottled water coolers is gradually declining with more independent filtered cooler dealers, OCS operators, and vending companies selling filtered coolers as a primary or add-on product.

Bottled water industry currently provides the single serve PET bottles, as well as the home and office delivery bottles. They also have the enhanced water bottles, which include oxygen-enriched, vitamin-enriched, and flavored waters. This business is highly profitable, with the flavored water being the current favorite with the consumers. However, single serve bottles still contribute to the majority of the market revenues.

The major participants in the PET market are the Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestle. These companies are creating a strong market presence in retail stores, supermarkets, restaurants, delis, club stores, and movie theatres. However, research shows that the water being marketed by these companies is actually treated municipal water and not from any spring or well.

All the bottled water companies should adhere to the FDA’s quality standards, standards of identity and good manufacturing practices. This ensures that the beverage companies must label their waters to define where the water actually came from and if it’s been purified or carbonated. All bottled water, be it “purified,” “spring,” “sterile” or “artesian” must meet all of the same regulations.

Bottled Water provides detailed information about bottled water, bottled water brands, and more. Bottled Water is affiliated with Traditional Mediterranean Diet.

Information On Selecting And Buying Computer Printers

This article attempts to answer some of these questions by running through the various types of printers out there. We’ll cover both ink jet and laser printers, so read on and find out more about these two categories of products.

A selection of some computer printers

Ink Jet Printers

Ink jet printers are the slowest type of printer, but are also the most affordable. Ink jet technology shoots sprays of colored dyes through tiny holes in a print head onto pages, giving resolutions of up to 4800 by 1200 dots per inch. This makes them capable of print high-quality graphics and photos.

Here are some of the considerations to think about when buying an inkjet printer.

Print quality

Always try to print out a sample from the ink jet printer you intend to buy. Check that the printout does not smudge and gives good color tone.

Maximum print resolution

The maximum print resolution (the number of ink dots in a square inch of paper) is another factor to look out for. This is especially important if you’re printing a lot of detailed graphics and photos.

Cost of Replacing a Cartridge

Remember that the ink in the printer is a consumable. Many manufacturers cash in on the replacement ink jet cartridges of ink jet printers. Before plunking down your cash, ask how much the replacement ink cartridges cost and how many pages each cartridge can print.

Monochrome Laser Printers

Monochrome laser printers are a necessity in the business world. They are now extremely cheap and affordable even for home users. Compared to ink jet printers, monochrome laser printers are faster and produce much better text quality. Also, the laser toner cartridges are cheaper to replace than ink jet cartridges. Let’s look at the key factors to consider when buying a monochrome laser printer.

Printing Speed

The speed at which the laser printer can output full pages of text is a important consideration when you’re looking for one. Always check this specification out before purchasing one.

Maximum print resolution

Similar to ink jet printers, the maximum print resolution is also a key consideration in monochrome laser printers. Pay attention to this specification if you’re printing out a lot of graphics.

Paper tray capacity

Although not critical to home users, the paper tray capacity is important to corporate users of laser printers. In large offices where many employees share the same printer, it is vital that the printer can hold a lot of paper.

Color Laser Printers

Color laser printers are catching on recently with small business owners, with once sky-high prices coming down to reasonable levels. Color laser printers are useful for printing color brochures, photographs, or graphics. These printers are also prohibitively expensive – so if you’re a home user, you’d most likely want to stay away from these. Let’s look at the key factors to consider when buying a color laser printer.

Print speed

If you own a publishing business, printing a lot of graphics, then spending extra money on a fast color laser printer makes good sense. Usually, the less-expensive model print at a rate that is too slow for a business.

Print quality

Print quality is very important for business owners who need to print crisp, detailed graphics. Remember to check out sample prints from the color laser printer you intend to buy.

Maximum print resolution

Again, the maximum print resolution is also a key consideration in color laser printers. You need to consider this when buying such printers.

Conclusion

Hopefully, this article has shown you the differences between ink jet printers, monochrome laser printers and color laser printers. If you’re out shopping for a printer, keep the above shopping tips in mind and you’ll be able to pick a model that’s just right for you.

Affiliate Marketing – The 10 Keys To Success

Copyright 2005 Michael Gates

Where can an average person start a home business without investing any money? The wonderful world of affiliate marketing.

For those looking to enter the world of affiliate marketing, there are some key concepts that can help you succeed. These 10 tips will help you maximize potential profit in the affiliate marketing
industry.

1. Focus on a specific area of interest. It can be tempting to sign up for a variety of programs on different topics, or areas of interest, to appeal to a large audience. You need to understand, there are already hundreds of thousands of online shopping malls, which is essentially what you’ll have. It will be almost impossible for you to compete with well established sites offering a variety of products. You need to focus on a particular topic, or niche.

2. Find the best affiliate programs for your niche. This seems to be a “no brainer”, but there are some things you need consider when choosing the most profitable affiliate program. Does the merchant offer products that people will buy? Is the commission you will be paid high enough to pay for some advertising and still be profitable? Usually, products that are difficult to sell, or are higher priced, offer a higher commission. And products that are easy to sell, and have a lower price, offer lower percentage cuts. Try to find the best commission rate for products that are priced at mid range, and products that will be easy to sell.

3. Build a content-filled web site focused on your niche. The primary focus of your web site is to sell the affiliate products you have chosen. But, if your site does not attract visitors, sales conversion will be virtually impossible. Create a site that focuses on the area of interest you have chosen, and populate it with rich, informative content that people would love to read. Good content will establish you as an expert in the niche. Plus, search engines love content which will give you a better position in the search engine listings.

4. Market your web site. You have to let the online community know about your site. Just because you now have a web site, doesn’t mean people will come. Submit online press releases related to your niche, submit your site to search engines. Exchange links with well-visited sites related to your niche, promote your site in online communities, and start a blog (web log). You have to spread the word that your site exists, and that it contains information that will fill the need of your target audience.

5. Market your affiliate products. After you have a consistent number of visitors, it’s time to promote the affiliate products you’re selling. This is usually done with a sales page that is part of your web site. A sales page is basically an article listing the benefits of your product, and what it will do for your niche audience. Benefits can be “it can improve the quality of your life”, or “learn the secrets the experts don’t want you to know”. These sales page benefits may seem exaggerated, but they work.

6. Build an email list. How many web sites have you visited? Have you visited a site, found something of interest, gotten interrupted, left the site and never returned? Of course you have. Don’t let this happen to your visitors. Ask your visitors for a first name and an email address when they visit your site. Offer them something in return for that information. If they have some interest in your offering, but leave the site for whatever reason, you can email them later, reminding them to come back to your site.

7. Don’t hide behind a web site. I am amazed at how many web sites I see with no name or contact information. Most people prefer to do business with someone with a real name, someone they can contact, someone they can get to know. Provide your real name, and an email address on your website so potential customers can contact you with questions, and know there is a real person behind that website.

8. Build a network. Become friends with other affiliate marketers. Share information about the best deals, the most effective strategies, and perhaps, even some lists of potential buyers. Remember, the world is all about a network of contacts, and you never know when one of your contacts will help you out.

9. Do not limit yourself to one affiliate program. Join as many as you can without losing the focus of what you want to sell. Greater variety is good, as long as your products are niche related. The more niche products you offer, the greater the chances that one will be bought.

10. Be patient and don’t quit. Don’t expect great results overnight. It takes time to build traffic to your site, to build your email list, and to build relationships. If you quit, you certainly won’t be successful. But if you’re patient and stick with it, affiliate marketing can be very profitable and rewarding.
