Rival broadband service provider 3 has filed a complaint against Vodafone with the Advertising Standards Authority for ‘misleading’ customers through its advertisement, which promises to provide 7.2 Mb mobile broadband speed.

It is partly because of this claim that Vodafone has risen to great heights in the highly competitive market of mobile broadband services in the UK. But 3 has put forth an argument that says that Vodafone’s services are only applicable in some parts of the country but are being presented as being much more far-reaching. A spokesperson for 3 said that even by using 3.6 Mbps technology to enhance the speed, Vodafone cannot possibly expect to deliver such high broadband speeds to its customers.

Vodafone responded to 3’s accusation by saying that it does provide 7.2 Mb speeds in London and in airports. The remaining areas will be covered only by end of this year. It also said that it is making arrangements to cover 80 percent of the nation at 1.8 Mb speeds in a few months’ time. Vodafone is also aiming to cover nearly 50 percent of the country at 3.6 Mb by the end of the summer season.

However, these comments by Vodafone only go further to strengthen the allegations made by 3 that Vodafone cannot possibly provide the speeds as claimed in its advertisement. 3 is probably losing its customers because of Vodafone’s false claims of high-speed broadband. Therefore, it might be easy to sympathise with 3, although every company is found exaggerating about its broadband speeds in their advertisements and they rarely disclose the actual speed of the service – click here for a mobile broadband speed check.
